CARPD President's Message - December 2025
From Fun Providers to the Essential Workforce: Global Examples Validate “Our Purpose”
When was the last time you reflected on the essential nature of our work? International policy recognizes what we've known all along: Parks are essential infrastructure.
A Global Perspective
- The City in Nature: Around 2020, Singapore shifts from "Garden City" to "City in Nature" and is more than a motto—it’s a legal mandate. The Park Connector Network Project requires every household to be within a 10-minute walk of a park by 2030.
- The Right to Roam: In Norway, the Outdoor Recreation Act of 1957 enshrines allemannsretten (Everyman's Right), giving citizens the Right to Roam on private land. This fundamental right affirms that access to nature is non-negotiable. No need for a trespass letter on file with local law enforcement here..
Park professionals are far more than just “Fun” providers - We are vital members of the essential workforce and are central for wellness and community life. Whether supporting mental health, nurturing youth, or promoting environmental stewardship, our Districts are the first line of defense to enhance people's quality of life.
Our purpose is clear, and the world is taking notice. Let these global examples reinforce our commitment to growth and investment in our teams. By continually enhancing our Districts, we move closer every day to making our own communities a true “City in Nature”.
The CARPD Board and Staff send you, and your loved ones, warm wishes for a joyful holiday season, and a Happy New Year.
